I know it's a good idea to put our contact information in cache log books & on stash notes but I'm not real keen on putting my personal email address (or phone number) out there in the wild. Using an email address just for caches is one solution for one cache hider.
The New Jersey caching groups were each founded on the idea that we're a community so I started thinking about community cache support. That begs the question of who's territory would support each cache and I realized that most questions a new cacher would have could be answered by anyone, not just the C/O. What we needed was a NJ based support system and a website to coordinate it.
Well, it just happened to have one laying around.
Introducing CacheNJ.net!
The site is intended to be a universal drop point (and search engine magnet) for all NJ caching. It serves as a general link you can put on your stash notes and a short name for CentralJerseyGeocaching. All you have to remember is CacheNJ. Dot Com or Dot Net will both work.
Behind the surface is an old school list-serv that we're calling Cache Info. It's basically a single email address that would-be cachers can use to get more information about the sport or an individual cache without having to sign up on Geocaching.com or one of the NJ sites. This is how it works:
This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
finds a cache in the woods near their house and notes an email address:

. They fire off an email looking for more info. That email is automatically distributed to everyone who has has signed up to help moderate the list-serv. You can reply directly to the user or through the list. Even if the cache owner has moved away there's still a community of semi-local cachers who are able to step up and answer questions, provide cache maintenance or, heaven forbid, pack-out an unwanted cache.
Realistically, I don't think this will get used much. That's Ok. Subscribe, set it and forget it. When the need arises, the list will be there waiting.
